My Clarinet-lessons in Finland
Kirstin KrügerIn summer 2007 I came to Finland to live for about one year in a Finish family as “Au Pair”. However I took my clarinet with me, less thinking to take lessons, but more expecting to find quite fast and easily new friends by engaging into an orchestra.
By Martin, a Swiss clarinet-colleague from the Student Orchestra of TKK Espoo, which my guest family has made contact to, I found out quite incidentally about Jörg Fabian’s phone-number.
I can remember my first lesson very well, because it was raining very strongly, I did not find the entrance door of the music institute and the battery of my mobile failed as well, so I couldn’t use it anymore at all. My quite embarrassing feeling to be delayed, maybe completely absent to my first clarinet lesson, was taken away, when a friendly smiling man with a stretched out hand came towards me asking:”Hi, you are Kirsten. Hello, I am Jörg Fabian.”
The following half an hour was used to show Jörg Fabian how much I have learned earlier during my 10 years of playing clarinet. Most of all things I got taught like breathing technique, guiding of sound and how much I was able to use these topics. Since this day we met once a week for a regular lesson.
I need to admit, in the beginning I could not cope sometimes quite the amount of ideas I received during the lesson. Sometimes I had some chaos in my head, needing to lay out peacefully his thoughts, before I realized the content. His comprehensive, picture like examples made me laugh often and helped me into the process.
Jörg Fabian is to be distinguished to all my pervious teachers by the fact of his detailed explanations and his positive encouragement, especially when something went very well.
Positive support during the lesson has woken up since quite some time my ambition to practice regularly at home for even further development and to be open for new things. During earlier years I practiced for concerts or exams only aiming for best remarks, but the deep musical interpretations got unfortunately shadowed over.
During the last year I realized myself the progress happened, by which I was ambitioned to work hard on myself.
THANK YOU, Jörg Fabian, that I got the chance to learn so many new things, that you were patient with me and that you brought back the joy of playing the clarinet!
